About Adelaide Hills

Altitude makes the Adelaide Hills markedly cooler than the neighbouring Barossa and McLaren Vale, and it supplies much of South Australia’s cool-climate white fruit and sparkling base.

The Hills sit directly above Adelaide and rise to around 700 metres, which makes them substantially cooler than the Barossa and McLaren Vale on either side. The zone is large and internally varied — Lenswood and Piccadilly at the top are genuinely cool, while the lower fringes are not — and a label saying "Adelaide Hills" covers a wide range.

It is where South Australia grows the grapes the warm valleys cannot: Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, plus a growing quantity of sparkling base. Bushfire is a recurring hazard, and the 2019–20 fires removed a substantial share of the region’s vineyards.

Adelaide Hills has a moderate climate with altitude and maritime influences, at roughly 34.9° of latitude. Nights are markedly cooler than days. Rainfall falls mostly in winter, leaving a dry growing season. Spring frost is an occasional problem. Altitude does the cooling: vineyards rise to around 700 metres directly above a warm plain, and the top of the range ripens several weeks behind the bottom.

Vintage variation

Vintage matters little

Reliable sunshine, low disease pressure and — often — irrigation to smooth out what rainfall does not deliver. The grapes ripen every year.

  • Latitude. At around 35°, there is more heat available than the vine needs in most years.
  • Rainfall timing. The rain arrives outside the growing season, so harvest is usually dry. This removes the largest single source of vintage variation.
  • Spring frost. Frost after budburst is an occasional risk here and reduces the crop when it happens.
  • Maritime influence. Nearby water lengthens the growing season and brings cloud and rain with it. Ripening is slower and less certain, and the spread between years is wider.
