About Casablanca Valley
Casablanca was planted from the 1980s specifically to find cool sites for white varieties, and it reoriented Chilean wine away from a purely red identity.
Its Sauvignon Blanc sits stylistically between the Loire and New Zealand — citrus and herbaceous, with less overt tropical fruit than Marlborough.
A coastal valley opening onto the Pacific, where the Humboldt Current chills the water to a degree that would be unusual at any latitude. Morning fog rolls inland and burns off by midday, cutting the effective growing-season temperature well below what the latitude implies.
It was planted from the mid-1980s specifically to give Chile a cool-climate white region, and its success prompted the wave of coastal planting — Leyda, San Antonio, Limarí — that reshaped Chilean wine. Spring frost is the recurring problem, and many sites use frost-protection systems that would be unnecessary further inland.
No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A country’s major wine division, usually containing appellations or sub-regions beneath it. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

Vintage variation
Vintage matters somewhat
A dependable climate with occasional difficult years. Most vintages are broadly similar; the exceptions are the ones worth knowing about.
- Latitude. At around 33°, there is more heat available than the vine needs in most years.
- Rainfall timing. The rain arrives outside the growing season, so harvest is usually dry. This removes the largest single source of vintage variation.
- Spring frost. A frost after budburst destroys the shoots carrying that year’s crop. The vine regrows, but the secondary buds are less fruitful, so the effect is a small vintage rather than a poor one.
- Maritime influence. Nearby water lengthens the growing season and brings cloud and rain with it. Ripening is slower and less certain, and the spread between years is wider.
- Growing-season temperature. Cool. There is little heat to spare, so a cloudy summer shows in the finished wine.
