Ruwer

A tiny, cold side valley near Trier, producing delicate Riesling of exceptional longevity.

coolcontinental
What to expect in the glass

Very light, delicate Riesling with high acidity, herbal and citrus notes and great precision. Ages for decades.

About Ruwer

The Ruwer is a small stream east of Trier, and its vineyard area is very small — a few hundred hectares.

The wines are the lightest and most delicate in the Mosel, and they age remarkably: bottles from the 1950s and earlier remain drinkable.

Maximin Grünhaus and Karthäuserhof, both former monastic estates, dominate the valley.

Ruwer is a sub-region, not an appellation

No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A named division within a wine region that carries no geographical indication of its own. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

  • MittelmoselThe middle stretch of the river, where the slopes are steepest and the great Riesling vineyards are.
  • MoselExtremely steep slate slopes above a winding river, producing the lightest and most delicate Riesling in the world.
