Wine region · Germany
Saale-Unstrut
One of the two most northerly wine regions in Germany, in the former East, on terraces above two rivers.
Light, dry, high-acid whites with green apple and citrus. Straightforward and increasingly well made.
About Saale-Unstrut
Saale-Unstrut lies at 51° north in Saxony-Anhalt, making it one of Germany’s two most northerly regions and among the most northerly in Europe.
It was part of East Germany until 1990, and its vineyards were largely state co-operatives producing for the domestic market; quality investment has come only since reunification.
The wines are light, dry and high in acidity, mostly from Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner and the Pinot family.

Only the rules that change what to expect in the glass or on the label. WineHQ does not reproduce production specifications, and each entry carries the date it was last checked because appellation rules change.
The designation is confirmed above. WineHQ has not read this appellation’s production specification, so it publishes no yields, ageing minima or permitted-variety lists for it — those come from the document linked above, not from a summary of it.
What to eat, and how to serve it
Derived from this region’s signature styles. Each is listed separately, because a region does not have one serving temperature.
