Chasselas that is neutral, textured and faintly saline; alpine reds that are light and peppery; and rare local whites with real character. Expensive and rarely seen outside Switzerland.

About Valais

The Valais follows the upper Rhône between Martigny and Brig, on steep terraces held by dry-stone walls, and produces roughly a third of Swiss wine.

It is very dry — the Alps on both sides strip the weather — and has been irrigated since the medieval period by bisses, open channels running along the mountainsides.

Its interest for an outsider is varietal. Petite Arvine, Amigne, Humagne Blanche, Cornalin and Heida are grown here and essentially nowhere else, and they are genuinely distinctive rather than merely obscure.

Almost no Swiss wine is exported — around 1–2% of production — which is why a country making wine of this quality is so little known abroad.

Valais is a wine region, not an appellation

No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A country’s major wine division, usually containing appellations or sub-regions beneath it. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

Valais has a moderate climate with altitude, continental and rain shadow influences. Nights are markedly cooler than days. Drought is a serious constraint. Vintage variation

Vintage matters little

Reliable sunshine, low disease pressure and — often — irrigation to smooth out what rainfall does not deliver. The grapes ripen every year.

  • Rain shadow. Mountains intercept the rain before it arrives, which makes the growing season dry and predictable — and usually means irrigation decides water supply rather than weather.
  • Continental influence. No large body of water to buffer the extremes. Continental places have hotter summers, colder winters and sharper frost risk, all of which widen the gap between years.
