How this was worked out
Formula
kcal = (ethanol grams × 7) + (sugar grams × 4)
Where
- V = 175 ml — Serving size. How much wine is in the glass.
- A = 13 % — ABV. Alcohol by volume from the label.
- RS = 2 g/l — Residual sugar. Sugar remaining after fermentation. Rarely stated on the label; a dry wine is typically under 4 g/l.
- ρ = 0.789 g/ml — Ethanol density. Standard density of ethanol, used to convert volume to mass.

- Ethanol volume: 175 ml × 13% = 22.8 ml = 22.8 ml
- Ethanol mass: 22.8 ml × 0.789 g/ml = 17.9 g = 17.9 g
- Calories from alcohol: 17.9 g × 7 kcal/g = 125.65 kcal = 125.65 kcal
- Sugar mass: 2 g/l × 175 ml ÷ 1000 = 0.35 g = 0.35 g

What this assumes
- Uses standard energy densities: 7 kcal per gram of ethanol and 4 kcal per gram of carbohydrate.
- Assumes glycerol and other minor components contribute negligibly, which is a simplification.
- Assumes a dry wine unless you change the residual sugar figure.
Where it stops being reliable
- This is an estimate from ABV and sugar, not measured nutrition data for a specific bottle. WineHQ does not hold product nutrition information.
- Residual sugar is not usually printed on wine labels, so the default of 2 g/l is an assumption about dry wine rather than a fact about yours.
- Alcohol dominates the total. Most of the difference between wines comes from ABV, not sugar, except in genuinely sweet wines.
