What it is
Light strike is a genuine, well-documented photochemical reaction rather than a piece of storage folklore, and it happens faster than most people expect.
Sparkling wine and pale rosé in clear bottles are the most vulnerable, which is an unfortunate collision between marketing and chemistry: clear glass sells pale wine, and clear glass is what damages it.
Some producers now use UV-filtering glass or opaque wrapping for exactly this reason.
It is one of the strongest practical arguments for buying wine from a shop that does not display it in a sunny window.
What causes it
- Exposure to light — particularly in the UV and blue range — degrading riboflavin and generating volatile sulfur compounds.
- Clear and pale green bottles offer far less protection than dark green or brown glass.
- Retail display under bright lighting, which can do measurable damage in days.
Can I fix it?
No — nothing will fix it
No. The reaction has already run, and light does not un-strike.
What you can do
- It cannot be reversed.
- Avoid buying bottles from bright display windows or the top of a lit shelf.
- Store wine in the dark, which is the single easiest storage precaution to get right.

Published because a reader holding a spoiled bottle has usually already been told to try one of these. Correcting the specific wrong advice is more use than stating the right answer beside it in silence.

- The sulfur compounds involved are more stubborn than the ones in ordinary reduction, and aeration rarely clears them.
