The phylloxera crisis
An American aphid destroyed most of Europe's vineyards, and grafting onto American rootstock was the eventual solution.
What happened
Phylloxera was identified in the Rhône in the 1860s, probably arriving on imported American vines. It feeds on roots, and European Vitis vinifera has no resistance to it.
Over roughly three decades it destroyed the majority of European vineyards. The economic and social consequences were severe — rural depopulation, emigration, and the collapse of entire local economies.
A great many proposed remedies failed, including flooding vineyards and burying live toads beneath the vines.
The solution was grafting European fruiting varieties onto resistant American rootstocks. It was fiercely resisted at the time by those who believed it would ruin the wine, and it is now near-universal practice.
The replanting reshaped what was grown. Many varieties never returned, vineyard areas contracted permanently, and the modern map of European wine dates substantially from this recovery.
Grafting did not eliminate phylloxera. The insect is still present in most vineyards; the rootstock simply tolerates it. Ungrafted vines survive only where sand, volcanic soil or geographic isolation prevents the insect from thriving.
