About Cahors

Cahors is where Malbec comes from, and for centuries it was one of the most valued wines in Europe — the "black wine of Cahors", dark and tannic, exported through Bordeaux and used to strengthen Bordeaux’s own wine.

Phylloxera and then the catastrophic frost of 1956 all but destroyed it. The appellation was only granted in 1971, and its recovery has been slow.

French Malbec is a different proposition from Argentine Malbec: cooler-grown, firmer, more tannic, with black fruit, violets and a savoury, earthy structure rather than the plush plum-and-cocoa of Mendoza. Comparing them is one of the most instructive things a reader can do with a single variety.

Argentina now grows several times more Malbec than France does, and the variety’s global identity is Argentine. Cahors has spent twenty years trying to reclaim it, including putting "Malbec" on labels that once said only Cahors.

Vintage variation

Vintage matters enormously

A marginal climate where ripeness is not guaranteed and the weather at flowering and at harvest can decide the year. The difference between two consecutive vintages here can be larger than the difference between two producers.

  • Latitude. At around 44°, ripeness is usually reached but is not a formality.
  • Spring frost. A frost after budburst destroys the shoots carrying that year’s crop. The vine regrows, but the secondary buds are less fruitful, so the effect is a small vintage rather than a poor one.
  • Maritime influence. Nearby water lengthens the growing season and brings cloud and rain with it. Ripening is slower and less certain, and the spread between years is wider.
  • Continental influence. No large body of water to buffer the extremes. Continental places have hotter summers, colder winters and sharper frost risk, all of which widen the gap between years.

What it does to the vine. Three river terraces at increasing height above the Lot, plus the limestone plateau. The higher terraces and the causse are poorer and cooler, ripen later, and give the more structured wines.
