About Hampshire

Hampshire is home to several of the most highly regarded English sparkling producers, with vineyards on chalk downland in the centre and south of the county.

As elsewhere in southern England, the near-total focus is on the three Champagne varieties.

The chalk of the South Downs and the Hampshire hills is the same Cretaceous formation that runs under Champagne, surfacing again after the Channel — which is the geological fact English sparkling wine is built on, and one of the rare cases where a soil claim is straightforwardly true rather than atmospheric.

Hampshire holds several of the largest English producers, and the county has been planted heavily since the 2000s as growing-season temperatures rose past the point where reliable ripening became possible.

Hampshire is a administrative area, not an appellation

No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A political unit — an Italian region, an English county, a US county — used as a wine area because that is how the industry and its readers talk about it, not because a wine authority delimited it. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

Marginal, and the vintage swing is correspondingly large. Spring frost and autumn rain are both live risks in most years.

Among the warmest and driest counties in England, with a long growing season and low rainfall — which is why several of the largest sparkling producers chose it. Spring frost remains the limiting risk rather than heat.

Vintage variation

Vintage matters enormously

A marginal climate where ripeness is not guaranteed and the weather at flowering and at harvest can decide the year. The difference between two consecutive vintages here can be larger than the difference between two producers.

  • Latitude. At around 51°, this is close to the limit at which grapes ripen at all. Marginal climates are where the weather decides the year.
  • Rain at harvest. Rain during the picking window is the single most decisive weather event in wine. It dilutes, it splits berries, and it invites rot into a crop days from being picked — and whether it falls is essentially luck.
  • Spring frost. A frost after budburst destroys the shoots carrying that year’s crop. The vine regrows, but the secondary buds are less fruitful, so the effect is a small vintage rather than a poor one.
  • Maritime influence. Nearby water lengthens the growing season and brings cloud and rain with it. Ripening is slower and less certain, and the spread between years is wider.
  • Growing-season temperature. Cool. There is little heat to spare, so a cloudy summer shows in the finished wine.

Soil and geology
