Malbec above all — plush, dark-fruited and floral, firmer and more savoury from the high Uco Valley than from the warmer Luján de Cuyo. Also increasingly serious Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay.

About Mendoza

Altitude is the organising variable. Luján de Cuyo sits around 900–1,100 m and produces plush, ripe Malbec; the Uco Valley climbs to 1,500 m and above, giving fresher, more structured, more floral wines.

Argentine Malbec is softer, riper and more velvety than its French counterpart in Cahors, with violet aromatics and sweet dark fruit.

Low humidity keeps disease pressure minimal, which is why organic viticulture is comparatively straightforward here.

High desert against the Andes, and effectively an engineered landscape: rainfall is around 200 mm a year and every vineyard depends on meltwater channelled through a system of canals that predates the Spanish.

Altitude does what latitude cannot. Vineyards run from around 600 metres up to 1,500 and beyond, and the temperature drop with height is what keeps acidity in fruit that ripens easily. The sub-regions are best understood as altitude bands rather than as places.

Mendoza is a wine region, not an appellation

No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A country’s major wine division, usually containing appellations or sub-regions beneath it. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

A desert in the Andean rain shadow, farmed on meltwater. Hail is the recurring hazard and netting is widespread.

Desert conditions with under 250 mm of annual rainfall, irrigated by Andean snowmelt. Intense high-altitude sunlight thickens grape skins; cold nights preserve acidity.

Vintage variation

Vintage matters somewhat

A dependable climate with occasional difficult years. Most vintages are broadly similar; the exceptions are the ones worth knowing about.

  • Latitude. At around 33°, there is more heat available than the vine needs in most years.
  • Spring frost. A frost after budburst destroys the shoots carrying that year’s crop. The vine regrows, but the secondary buds are less fruitful, so the effect is a small vintage rather than a poor one.
  • Rain shadow. Mountains intercept the rain before it arrives, which makes the growing season dry and predictable — and usually means irrigation decides water supply rather than weather.
  • Continental influence. No large body of water to buffer the extremes. Continental places have hotter summers, colder winters and sharper frost risk, all of which widen the gap between years.
