About Montagne de Reims

The Montagne de Reims is a broad, wooded plateau between Reims and the Marne valley, planted on its slopes rather than its top. It is Champagne’s principal source of Pinot Noir.

Pinot Noir contributes body, structure and red-fruit weight to a blend. The Montagne’s north-facing slopes — counterintuitively prized — ripen slowly and retain the acidity a long-lived Champagne needs.

Several of the villages rated 100% on the old échelle des crus are here, including Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzenay and Mailly.

Bouzy is also known for a still red wine, Coteaux Champenois, made in tiny quantities and mostly in warm years.

Montagne de Reims is a sub-region, not an appellation

No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A named division within a wine region that carries no geographical indication of its own. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

Montagne de Reims has a cool climate with continental influence, at roughly 49.2° of latitude. Spring frost is a recurring threat. At 49° north this is close to the northern limit for ripening grapes at all. That marginality is the reason Champagne became a sparkling wine region: the base wines are thin and sharp, which is exactly what a second fermentation needs.

Vintage variation

Vintage matters enormously

A marginal climate where ripeness is not guaranteed and the weather at flowering and at harvest can decide the year. The difference between two consecutive vintages here can be larger than the difference between two producers.

  • Latitude. At around 49°, this is close to the limit at which grapes ripen at all. Marginal climates are where the weather decides the year.
  • Spring frost. A frost after budburst destroys the shoots carrying that year’s crop. The vine regrows, but the secondary buds are less fruitful, so the effect is a small vintage rather than a poor one.
  • Continental influence. No large body of water to buffer the extremes. Continental places have hotter summers, colder winters and sharper frost risk, all of which widen the gap between years.
  • Growing-season temperature. Cool. There is little heat to spare, so a cloudy summer shows in the finished wine.

Roots penetrate the soft chalk directly.

What it does to the vine. Chalk is porous enough to hold a large volume of water and release it slowly, so vines rarely suffer drought stress even in dry summers, while the surface drains freely after rain. It also reflects light onto the fruit and stores warmth — useful at a latitude where ripening is marginal.
