About Willamette Valley

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir is generally lighter, higher in acid and more savoury than Californian examples, with red cherry, forest floor and fine tannin.

The valley’s nested AVAs — Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, Ribbon Ridge and others — are distinguished largely by soil, with volcanic Jory soils and marine sedimentary soils producing recognisably different wines.

A long north–south valley between the Coast Range and the Cascades, at almost exactly the latitude of Burgundy. The Coast Range moderates the Pacific weather without blocking it entirely, which gives a cool, damp, marginal climate where ripening is never a formality.

Two soil types dominate and growers distinguish them sharply: Jory, a red volcanic soil from ancient basalt flows, and Willakenzie, a marine sedimentary soil. The vineyards were largely planted from 1965 by people who chose the site from climate data rather than tradition.

Marginal and damp, at Burgundy’s latitude with the Coast Range moderating the Pacific. Autumn rain is the decisive annual variable.

Cool and wet, with a dry late summer. Harvest rain is the recurring risk, and vintage variation is substantial by New World standards.

Vintage variation

Vintage matters enormously

A marginal climate where ripeness is not guaranteed and the weather at flowering and at harvest can decide the year. The difference between two consecutive vintages here can be larger than the difference between two producers.

  • Latitude. At around 45°, ripeness is usually reached but is not a formality.
  • Rain at harvest. Rain during the picking window is the single most decisive weather event in wine. It dilutes, it splits berries, and it invites rot into a crop days from being picked — and whether it falls is essentially luck.
  • Spring frost. Frost after budburst is an occasional risk here and reduces the crop when it happens.
  • Maritime influence. Nearby water lengthens the growing season and brings cloud and rain with it. Ripening is slower and less certain, and the spread between years is wider.
  • Growing-season temperature. Cool. There is little heat to spare, so a cloudy summer shows in the finished wine.
