About Yamanashi

Yamanashi, in the basin west of Tokyo, holds around a third of Japan’s vineyard and the great majority of its serious wine.

Koshu is the variety. It is a pink-skinned Vitis vinifera variety with some Vitis davidii ancestry, grown in Japan for a thousand years and almost nowhere else, and its thick skins are what let it survive the rainy season.

The wine is very light, low in alcohol, delicate and faintly citrus- and yuzu-scented, with almost no aromatic intensity. It is a subtle wine, deliberately, and is often described as suited to Japanese food precisely because it does not shout.

The humidity is the whole viticultural story: monsoon rain and typhoons arrive during the growing season, and the pergola training used here exists to keep fruit off the ground and moving in the air.

Yamanashi is a wine region, not an appellation

No authority delimits this name or attaches rules to it. A country’s major wine division, usually containing appellations or sub-regions beneath it. That does not make it less real or less useful — it means nothing legal follows from it, and you will not generally find it on a label as a controlled designation.

Vintage matters somewhat

A dependable climate with occasional difficult years. Most vintages are broadly similar; the exceptions are the ones worth knowing about.

  • Latitude. At around 36°, there is more heat available than the vine needs in most years.
  • Rain at harvest. Rain during the picking window is the single most decisive weather event in wine. It dilutes, it splits berries, and it invites rot into a crop days from being picked — and whether it falls is essentially luck.
  • Continental influence. No large body of water to buffer the extremes. Continental places have hotter summers, colder winters and sharper frost risk, all of which widen the gap between years.
