Red grape variety

Muscat Bailey A

Japan’s most planted red: a 1927 hybrid with a distinctive confected strawberry aroma.

Pronounced MUS-kat BAY-lee AY

What is Muscat Bailey A?

Muscat Bailey A carries a pronounced, sweet-toned strawberry aroma — often described as confected — that comes from its American hybrid parentage and marks it out immediately.

It is light in tannin and body, and is generally made in a soft, fruit-forward style meant to be drunk young and cool. Some producers use oak to temper the aroma.

It was one of the first two Japanese varieties admitted to the OIV list, which allows it to be named on labels for export.

Origin

Bred in 1927 at Iwanohara in Niigata by Zenbei Kawakami, crossing the American hybrid Bailey with Muscat of Hamburg. It was created to survive Japan’s humid summers, which vinifera struggles with.

Identity verified against VIVC

The Vitis International Variety Catalogue, maintained by the Julius Kühn Institute, holds this variety as accession 8189 under the prime name MUSCAT BAILEY A, with berry skin colour noir and country of origin japan, and the pedigree "BAILEY X MUSCAT HAMBURG". Checked 2026-08-17.

About 45 minutes to an hour in the fridge from room temperature, or take it out of the fridge about an hour before serving.

Decanting

No need to decant

Nothing about this wine suggests it needs decanting. Light, aromatic and sparkling wines generally lose more than they gain.

Glass

Burgundy bowl

A wide bowl gives a delicate, aromatic red more surface area to release aroma, and directs it to the nose from a wider rim.

Ageing

Wines made from this grape are generally at their best within a few years.

Made in Yamanashi to be drunk young and cool. The confected strawberry aroma from its American hybrid parentage is the whole character, it fades quickly, and there is very little tannin or structure underneath it.
