Climate change and wine
Warming is already reshaping where wine is grown and what it tastes like.
Overview
Wine is unusually sensitive to temperature, and grape harvest dates are one of the longest continuous climate records available — some European regions have documented them for centuries.
The observed effects are consistent: earlier budburst and harvest, higher sugar levels and therefore higher alcohol, lower acidity, and changed aromatic profiles. Cool-climate regions have benefited; warm ones increasingly struggle.
The English wine industry is the clearest beneficiary. Reliable ripening across a wider area is a substantial part of why it has grown as it has, alongside investment and improved expertise.
Responses include planting at higher altitude or cooler aspects, changing rootstocks and clones, adjusting canopy management, picking earlier, and in some cases changing variety entirely. Bordeaux has approved additional varieties partly on this basis.
The risks are not only about heat. Increased wildfire brings smoke taint; more erratic weather brings frost, hail and drought; and water availability is becoming the binding constraint in several regions.
The warming trend and its effects on harvest dates and sugar levels are well documented. Projections about which specific regions become unviable are far less certain, and WineHQ avoids stating them as fact.
