Climate change reshapes the wine map
Warming has moved harvest dates, raised alcohol levels and made new regions viable while pressuring old ones.
What happened
Harvest date records — some running for centuries in European regions — show a clear and accelerating shift towards earlier picking.
Typical alcohol levels have risen by one to two percentage points in many regions over recent decades, and acidity has fallen correspondingly.
Cool regions have benefited. England, Tasmania, Belgium and southern Scandinavia have become viable for commercial viticulture.
Warm regions face heat spikes, drought, water restrictions and, increasingly, wildfire smoke taint.
Responses include planting higher and cooler, changing rootstocks and clones, picking earlier, and in some cases changing variety — Bordeaux approved additional varieties partly on this basis.
