Regenerative viticulture
Soil-first farming with a genuine evidence base for some claims and considerably weaker support for others.
The short answer
Regenerative viticulture prioritises soil health: permanent cover crops, reduced tillage, compost, integrated grazing and increased biodiversity. The soil-structure and biodiversity benefits are well supported. The carbon-sequestration claims frequently attached to it are much less so.
Overview
The term arrived in wine from broader regenerative agriculture in the 2010s and has spread quickly. There is no single certification and the practices vary.
It overlaps heavily with organic and biodynamic farming without being identical to either — it is defined by outcomes sought rather than by inputs prohibited.
How it works
The mechanism, at the scope it has actually been established.
Permanent cover crops and reduced tillage are associated with improved soil aggregate stability, reduced erosion and higher soil organic matter. These are well-established agronomic findings and not specific to vineyards.
Higher organic matter improves water infiltration and holding capacity, which matters increasingly where rainfall is becoming less reliable.
Cover crops also compete with vines for water and nitrogen, which is a vigour-management tool in fertile sites and a genuine risk in dry ones.
Integrating grazing animals for weed control and fertility is practised, and it requires care around soil compaction and around what the animals eat.
Carbon sequestration is where the claims outrun the evidence. Soils can accumulate carbon under these practices, but the rates, the durability of the storage and how it is measured are all contested, and a vineyard’s total footprint is dominated by glass, transport and refrigeration rather than by soil.
The absence of a common definition or certification means "regenerative" on a bottle is not a verifiable claim. The underlying practices are real and measurable; the label is not.
