What is Priorat?
The defining feature is llicorella — a decomposed slate and quartz soil that holds almost no water, forcing roots deep and producing minute yields.
The region was close to abandonment before a small group of producers revived it in the late 1980s, and it reached international prominence within a decade.
The wines are powerful: high in alcohol, dense in tannin, with a mineral, almost tarry character attributed to the slate.
Priorat holds DOQ status, Catalonia’s equivalent of DOCa, shared in Spain only with Rioja.

Built for it. The best examples change substantially and are often better at twenty years than at five. The worst examples of the same style are not, which is why the producer matters more here than anywhere.
Why
- Favours ageing. Acidity. High. Acidity is the single best predictor of longevity across every style — a low-pH wine is more stable both chemically and microbiologically.
- Favours ageing. Tannin. Very high. Tannins are antioxidants consumed by oxygen ahead of the fruit, and they soften as they polymerise — which is both the protection and the improvement people mean by "coming round".
- Favours ageing. Concentration. Full-bodied and concentrated. This correlates with longevity rather than causing it, but a wine with more to lose takes longer to lose it.
What this cannot tell you
- Age is not improvement. A great many wines are made to be drunk within two years and get worse, not better, with time — and there is no shame in a style that is at its best young.
