What actually makes a wine good?
Balance, intensity, complexity, typicity, length and the absence of faults — and where objective assessment stops and preference begins.
The short answer
Professional assessment rests on a small number of criteria: balance, intensity of flavour, complexity, length of finish, typicity, and freedom from faults. These are useful and partly objective. None of them tells you whether you will enjoy the wine.
Overview
The question deserves a direct answer rather than either evasion or false precision.
There is genuine expert agreement about a lot of it. Trained tasters converge more than sceptics expect on whether a wine is faulty, whether it is balanced and how long the finish is.
There is also genuine, irreducible subjectivity, and pretending otherwise is how wine culture becomes intimidating.
How it works
The mechanism, at the scope it has actually been established.
Balance means no single component — acid, tannin, alcohol, sweetness, oak — standing out at the expense of the others. It is the most agreed-upon criterion and the most useful.
Intensity and concentration describe how much flavour is present and how vivid it is, independent of what the flavours are.
Complexity means several distinguishable characters rather than one, and ideally characters that change as the wine sits in the glass.
Length is how long flavour persists after swallowing. It correlates well with expert judgements and is one of the easier things for a beginner to notice deliberately.
Typicity asks whether the wine tastes like what it claims to be. This is where quality assessment and personal preference genuinely diverge: a wine can be excellent and atypical, and appellation panels may reject it for precisely that.
Faultlessness is the floor. A wine with cork taint or volatile acidity above threshold has a problem, and that is a technical judgement rather than a matter of taste.

Not true
“Thick, slow legs running down the glass mean a rich, high-quality wine.”
Legs are a surface-tension effect driven mostly by alcohol content. They tell you something about strength, and nothing at all about quality.
Not true
“The older the wine, the better it will be.”
The large majority of wine is made to drink within a few years and gets worse, not better. Only a small proportion has the structure to improve, and even that eventually declines.
Blind tasting studies repeatedly show that even experienced tasters are influenced by price, label and context, and that individual judges are less consistent than they believe. Quality assessment is skilled work, not measurement.
WineHQ describes style, not quality. Its taste model records that a wine is high in tannin, not that high tannin is good — a distinction the architecture enforces, because a preference engine that quietly encoded a quality hierarchy would be recommending its authors’ taste under the appearance of structure.
