The human factor: how much of a wine is decisions
A corrective to over-crediting geography. Picking date, extraction, oak, blending and ageing move a wine further than most site differences do.
The short answer
A great deal of what distinguishes one wine from another was decided by a person, not by a place. Harvest date, extraction, fermentation temperature, malolactic fermentation, oak regime, blending and time before release are all choices, and collectively they can move a wine further than the differences between neighbouring vineyards.
Overview
Wine writing systematically over-credits geography, partly because place is what appellation systems are organised around and partly because it makes a better story.
This page exists as a structural counterweight. It is not an argument that site does not matter — it plainly does — but that the human contribution is routinely understated.
The clearest demonstration is that two producers working adjacent rows of the same vineyard in the same year reliably make distinguishable wines.
How it works
The mechanism, at the scope it has actually been established.
Harvest date alone sets sugar, acidity and phenolic ripeness simultaneously, and a fortnight’s difference can be worth more than a degree of mean growing-season temperature.
Extraction decisions in red winemaking — cap management frequency, fermentation temperature, time on skins, press fraction handling — determine how much of the available tannin and colour actually reaches the wine.
Malolactic fermentation is a switch: allowing it, blocking it, or partially converting changes acidity and texture substantially, and it is invisible on the label.
Oak regime covers vessel size, wood origin, toast, proportion of new wood and duration, and its aromatic contribution ranges from negligible to dominant.
Blending is compositional. Which parcels, which press fractions, which vintages in a non-vintage wine — these are the decisions that define a house style.
And when the wine is released is itself a decision, one that regions like Rioja have made into a formal classification.
Why it matters in the glass
It explains why producer reputation carries as much weight as appellation for experienced buyers, and why "a good vintage" is a weaker predictor than it sounds.

How much of a wine’s character is site and how much is decision has never been cleanly quantified, and probably cannot be: the two are not independent, because producers choose their methods partly in response to their site.
