Terroir
A genuinely useful idea that also carries a lot of unsupported claims.
Overview
Terroir describes the combination of place-based factors that make wine from one site consistently distinctive: climate, soil, aspect, altitude, drainage and local practice.
The core observation is sound and was made empirically over centuries: adjacent plots planted with the same grape produce consistently different wine. Burgundian monks documented this long before anyone could explain it.
The mechanisms that hold up are climatic and physical. Sun exposure, temperature, water availability and drainage demonstrably change how grapes ripen and therefore how the wine tastes.
The mechanism that does not hold up is direct mineral transfer from rock to glass. WineHQ uses "terroir" because it names something real, while declining to endorse every explanation attached to it.
Human practice is also part of terroir, and is often quietly excluded from romantic accounts. Which clone is planted, when it is picked and what vessel it ferments in shape the wine as much as the hillside does.
Terroir is best understood as a well-observed pattern with a partly understood mechanism. That is a normal state of affairs in agriculture and does not diminish the concept.
